Film Poster Analysis - Interstellar

"Interstellar" - 2014 - Christopher Nolan

If you have seen my Top 5 Favourite Films post, then it is clear to see why this next post will be analyzing a film poster from one of my all time favourite films - Interstellar.

The first connotation which we can make of this film poster of this recent box-office hit, is the title. The chosen title for this film is "Interstellar" which is a word defined as something which is occurring or being situated between stars. This immediately tells us as the audience that the setting for this film will occur in space and among the stars. Furthermore, there is more evidence to show that this is likely to be a space related film as the first half of the film title has, what look like, flickers of stars or light which again suggest that this is film set in space.

Films which are usually set in space portray pictures of planets and galaxies which gives connotations of there being adventure and excitement. The sense of pace and adventure can also be seen from the way the planet and the spacecraft are blurred to show movement, but also as if time is bending and against this spacecraft in many ways.

It is noticeable that the left side of this poster appears darker than the right side. Assuming that this film will be mainly set in space, the darker left side could imply that there is a black hole. The connotations of this is if the ship is almost trying to escape from the darkness by travelling at speed through space towards the light, which again give connotations of time being a key theme to this film.

In addition to the white flickers of stars I had mentioned earlier in the film title, we can also very faintly see red and blue flickers of light shown on the planet. This could give huge suggestions towards the audience that scientific theories/ideas are possibly explained or featured in this film. In this case, the red and blue flickers give connotations that could hint to us that the red and blue shift theory within Physics would be explained in this film.

Within the film poster it is also very noticeable that the names of the main actors of this film who have been highlighted in white, which is to potentialy show to the audience the importance of these actors (eg: Mathew McConaughey) which give further connotations of this film being exciting with a line-up of outstanding casts.

Overall, the denotations of this film poster suggest that this spacecraft is on some sort of interstellar mission in space where there is a lot of pace, adventure, and excitement from the way the poster is shown to be very blurred.
