Film Openings Research | Hitman Agent 47

As mentioned in the previous post, the next Opening Sequence which I am going to be analyzing is from "Hitman Agent 47". This Opening Sequence of this film contains several techniques and conventions which are used to establish the mood to the audience of this film. There also some good fight scenes in this Opening Sequence which we could dub down and replicate for our Action/Adventure film. I will be exploring these in this blog post.

Location: In a secret base of Syndicate International in the city of Salzburg, Austria. Similar to 007 as Agent 47 is relentless and fearless because of the way he has been programmed, meaning he is very adaptable in any given situation and anywhere in the world.

Production Company: TSG Entertainment

Distribution Company: 20th Century Fox

Mise-en-Scene: Bloody and very dark (low key lighting), which is matched with Agent 47's role of assassinating specific targets as well as the black suit which he wears and keeps clean throughout the film. His straightforward mindset and obedience is also matched as he is a clone soldier that cannot feel emotions. Narrow corridors indicate his stealthiness when he breaches to attack on the Syndicate International members in this scene. Lots of gadgets such as guns, explosives, wire etc are also included as well.

Camerawork: Lots of medium close-up shots used to emphasize Agent 47's body language during the Opening Sequence when he interrogates into the base shooting at members of the Syndicate. Several extreme close-ups are also used to show the aggression in this Agent's face when talking to the elite member.

Credits: Gradually come in one at a time as the scene progresses with the title of the film appearing towards the end of Agent 47's interrogation which is fitting with his attitude of "getting the job done".

Considering some possible examples of techniques used in this Opening Sequence like the Mise-en-Scene, camera shots and location, we can now begin to start including some ideas from this Opening Sequence for our film as we now know what the codes and conventions and techniques are of an Opening Sequence to an Action/Adventure film. This scene in particular is one which we could take inspiration from for fighting sequences and Mise-en-Scene, and the Skyfall Opening Sequence for camerawork and chases.
