Film Openings Research | James Bond 007 - Skyfall

For Alex's and my film Opening Sequence, we now both to research some Opening Sequences which are from Action Adventure films. For this we both chose to look at the opening to "Skyfall" as well as another opening of our choice, in my case I will be choosing "Hitman Agent 47" as the open sequence is relevant to our genre and there are a lot of good stunts used in this sequence which we may use ourselves.

This post will be looking in particular the Opening Sequence of "Skyfall" and looking at what techniques and conventions are used to establish the mood to the audience of this film.

Location: Shot in Turkey, IstanbulA very foreign and crowded atmospheric area that is very overpopulated. The use of having a chase scene in an overpopulated area whilst the protagonist "007" not struggling to chase after the criminal, makes him seem very aspirational because of his capability of completing his task no matter conditions.

Production Company: Eon Productions

Distribution Company: Sony Pictures

Mise-en-Scene: Blood and fire are shown a lot throughout the film which both relate to danger. The low key lighting in the scene which is created to reflect the mood of the extract. Common features of Action/Adventure films are guns and weapons which are certainly shown throughout this film and especially this opening scene. To disorientate the audience, the opening shot is in black and white, and gradually moves into a coloured picture for the rest of the scene.

Camerawork: Handheld movement, dolly cams and drones are used to establish the setting and to follow the chase sequence of 007. An extreme close-up of the main characters eye as the angle of the camera is canted suggesting disorientation. The main character is shown from a low angle suggesting he has power.

Considering some possible examples of techniques used in this opening sequence like the Mise-en-Scene, camera shots and location, it is also important to also notice how they introduce the characters in the opening credits in the opening sequence. They use a lot of fades and wipes to display the text whilst using some special effects to introduce the themes which are going to be explored in this film including romance, death, action and adventure.

Having now analysed the techniques and conventions used in the "Skyfall" Opening Sequence, we can now take some of the ideas used in this film opening and use it in our Opening Sequence, but first I have to now analyse the next Opening Sequence to a Action/Adventure film which is "Hitman Agent 47".
